Computer science The paper presented the study about student’s understanding of the topics in mathematics related to higher order thinking skills (HOTs).Digital Wayang Kulit (DWK) is utilized for the purpose. The motivation for the study was based on the current challenges faced by primary students to understand beyond the surface level. We aimed for deep learning (DeL) that required students to naturally apply their HOT skills in mathematics. Applying such ability in DWK is a challenge on its own. This study proposed a matrix, called deep learning matrix (DeLMax) introduced in DWK, which utilized HOT skills namely analyzing, evaluation, and creation.DWK embedded activities which were based on DeL-Max and have been implemented in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in order to investigate its performance in terms of DeL.The activities which require HOTs been implemented in eight mathematics modules by means of DWK. Also, HOTs activities in DWK, its criteria and activities were compared and analyzed against DeL.The DeL-Max used aimed for 75% increment of HOTs achievement.DWK tried to implement HOTs and if all the modules are done successfully, we can confidently state that at least the students acquire 75% HOTs activities of all types. The matrix is generalizable enough that it can be utilized in other mathematics courseware or tools to support DeL that actually bring out the HOTs in students.
